Tomato Chutney (Andhra Style)


Red ripe tomatoes - 3 or 4
Onion - 1 medium sized
Red Chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
Green chillies - 5
Bengal gram dal - 1 tsp
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Salt - As required


Dice onions into small square pieces and cut green chillies into small pieces and keep side.
Heat oil in kadai and add mustard seeds.  Once they start spluttering, add bengal gram dal.  When the dal turns light brownish, add chopped onions, green chillies and fry them till onion turns light brown and soft.  Add tomatoes and cook for 5 mins.  Now add turmeric and salt and mix well and cook for 10-15 mins.  Keep stirring in between so that it does not stick to the bottom.  Add chilli powder and fry for a minute, then add about half a cup of water and cook for 5-10 minutes till the water content reduces and remove from fire.

Tastes really good with Rotis or rice.
